Welcome to the memorial page for

Jens E. Thornton

August 13, 2017

Jens E. Thornton of Squantum died peacefully Aug. 13 with his family by his side.  Jens was born in Arlington MA.  Cherished husband of the late Carol A. (Dalton).  Loving father of Marlene E. of Quincy and Oak Bluffs, Gail I. Nicholson and her husband Michael of CA, J. Eric of Squantum, Bruce S. and his wife Maryanne of Norwell, Mark G of Quincy, Leif A. and his wife Lee of Weymouth  and June E. Kaps and her husband Jeffrey of Squantum.  He is also survived by 26 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Brother of Elsie Fiore of Arlington and Valgerd Arend of Hanover.

He was a tireless champion of the environment.  He spoke for the trees, the oceans, the fish and crustaceans.  And fought to Save Our Shores.  He was a much needed thorn in the side of Quincy politics, fighting tooth and nail for open space and against political corruption.  He fought Massport/FAA to force them to re-direct air traffic to over the water.  He fought the city of Boston/State to stop them from filling in the harbor for The World’s Fair.  And tried in vain to keep the Marina from being developed.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral Service Friday at 11:00 am in the First Church of Squantum, 164 Bellevue Rd., Quincy.  Visiting hour Thursday 4-8 pm in the Lydon Chapel, 644 Hancock St., Quincy.  Interment will be private.  In lieu of flower donations can be made to the American Heart Association, 300 5th Ave, Waltham, MA 02451.
